Football fans are being urged to have ‘none for the road’ as the FIFA World Cup begins this week, with Warwickshire Road Safety Partnership (WRSP) backing the Department for Transport’s THINK! campaign and encouraging people to make safe choices this summer.
With the tournament taking place in Canada, Mexico and the United States, many matches will be played later in the evening or overnight in UK time, leading to extended opening hours, later socialising, and the potential for increased alcohol consumption. Combined with the wider appeal of major sporting events, this is likely to mean larger crowds, busier venues, and more opportunities for risky decisions around drink driving.
The Partnership is calling on drivers to plan ahead by choosing alcohol-free options or arranging a safe journey home, particularly on nights when fixtures run late. The message reflects national THINK! guidance encouraging drivers to “THINK! 0%” if they are getting behind the wheel, and to make “none for the road” the only safe choice.
