An estimated £4 million worth of stolen vehicles and equipment have been recovered by the Warwickshire Police Rural Crime Team since they were launched, as they celebrate their five year anniversary.

The team was launched in October 2019 with a purpose to reduce rural crime across the county. Over the years the team has been increased, helped by funding from the Police and Crime Commissioner, and now has a dedicated Sergeant, Coordinator and eight Police Constable posts, plus a Rural Assistant who provides crime prevention support.

Officers are based in Stratford for the South and Atherstone for the North and East, allowing the team to have a presence across the whole of the county.

Day-to-day, they specialise in key types of rural crime including agricultural vehicles, livestock, equine, fly tipping & waste crime, wildlife, heritage and farm related incidents, working and engaging with rural communities, plus providing crime prevention advice, running regular proactive operations and patrolling in their areas as well as working with neighbouring forces.

The team also have dedicated vehicles and equipment including 4 x 4’s, drones and specialised kit.

They have been acknowledged nationally for their work, with individuals receiving awards and commendations, plus a team award in 2021 from The High Sheriff of Warwickshire in recognition of great and valuable service to the community.

Warwickshire Police and Crime Commissioner Philip Seccombe said:

“Crime in our rural areas is a major concern for people across Warwickshire so I am encouraged to hear about the brilliant work being undertaken by the Rural Crime Team and will continue to support this dedicated resource.

“I know through my regular engagement with farmers and rural businesses that crime can have a devastating effect, so this work is very much crucial to key areas of our community.”

Chief Inspector for Local Policing Katie Reynolds said:

“In the five years since the Rural Crime Team was established, they have made a remarkable impact on policing in Warwickshire – a county with a high proportion of rural space.

“Dedicated equipment and focus combined with a relentless ethos to protect their communities is a winning combination.”
