FREEDOM OF INFORMATION REQUEST REFERENCE NO: 772-2025

 

I write in connection with your request for information which was received on 28^th July 2025 as follows:

 

For each of these crime types, can you please let me know the total number of offences that were committed by those who are not British born for each of the last five years:

 

Robbery

Theft

Burglary

Sexual offences

Violence against the person

 

Please display this data both as a raw number and that raw number displayed as a percentage of all offences committed of that offence type (i.e. offences committed by both British-born and foreign born offenders).

 

On 29^th July a request for clarification was sent to you as follows:

 

Please be advised that ‘British born’ is not information recorded within the Crime Recording System.  There is a ‘Nationality’ field, and it may be possible to conduct searches for the listed offences where the ‘Nationality’ field is other than: British, English, Welsh, Scottish or Northern Irish.  However, it should be noted that this is not a mandatory field and therefore, not all records will have a nationality recorded. 

 

Please further note that percentages do not constitute information held, but it may be possible to provide the total number of such offences recorded.

Response: When considering the information please note:

 

Information was obtained by conducting searches of the Crime Recording System for all offences, recorded between 1^st January 2020 and 31^st December 2024, classified under the following Primary Home Office Offence Groups:

 

• Burglary
• Robbery
• Theft
• Sexual Offences
• Violence against the Person.

 

From these results, the total number of offences recorded per year was ascertained. The results were further refined to determine the number of offences with at least one suspect role attached, and from these the following was ascertained:

 

• The total number of suspects with no nationality recorded, i.e., where ‘blank’, ‘refused’, or ‘unknown’ was selected. 

 

• The total number of suspects where the nationality was recorded and was other than: British, English, Welsh, Scottish or Northern Irish. 

 

 

Please note that not all offences have a suspect role attached and some may have more than one suspect role attached; therefore, the number of suspect(s) will not correlate to the number of crimes recorded overall for the period.
