FREEDOM OF INFORMATION REQUEST REFERENCE NO: 699-2025
I write in connection with your request for information which was received on 10th July 2025 as follows:
The total number of incidents attended by your service where sleep, fatigue or driving while tired was recorded as a factor for each of the past five calendar years (2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024 and partial data for 2025 if available)
Incidents could include, but are not limited to: Falling asleep while driving, road traffic collisions where driver fatigue was cited, etc
If there is no specific marker or code for "sleep" or "fatigue", I would be grateful if you could instead provide the number of incidents in which any relevant fatigue-related terms were noted in officer or incident logs-e.g., via keyword search for: "sleep", "fatigue", "tired", "exhaustion", "drowsy", etc.
On 15th July 2025 a request for clarification was sent to you as follows:
Please could you clarify the following:
Your request appears to be indicating that you require searches to be made in relation to incident logs via the Command & Control System; however, the crux of your request seems to be in relation to Road Traffic Collisions and, if this is the case, there may be a more reliable way to ascertain this type of information.
When police officers attend the scene of a collision, they can select up to 6 factors they believe contributed to the collision and one of those is relevant to tiredness/fatigue. I therefore wonder whether the information you are seeking would be better answered by conducting the following search:
The number of RTCs attended where driving while tiredness/fatigue was recorded as a contributory factor for each of the past five calendar years (2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024 and partial data for 2025 if available).
However, if this is not required, and you do wish to continue with a search of the Command & Control System then this can be carried out; however, please be aware that a keyword search is likely to return a large amount of irrelevant information and if it is necessary to review each return for relevance, this may exceed the fees limit. Further, such a search may not capture all relevant information as it would rely on an individual reporting this factor at the initial point of contact, when it is likely that all they would be reporting is an RTC has taken place but not have the knowledge to report the tiredness element.
Please advise how you wish to proceed.
On 15th July 2025 you advised:
I can confirm that I am happy for the following search instead: "the number of RTCs attended where driving while tiredness/fatigue was recorded as a contributory factor for each of the past five calendar years (2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024 and partial data for 2025 if available)".
Please find the Warwickshire Police response set out below.
Response: Please be advised that accurate collision figures for 2025 are currently unavailable as some reports are yet to be filed. Therefore, a response has been provided for the period 1st January 2020 to 31st December 2024.
2020 = 21
2021 = 32
2022 = 25
2023 = 22
2024 = 25
Please note that the numerical data presented in this response is an un-audited snapshot of un-published data sourced from "live" systems and is subject to the interpretation of the original request by the individual extracting the data.
Every effort has been made to ensure that the information provided is as accurate as possible; however, the data is subject to the inaccuracies inherent in any large-scale recording system that relies on manual input, therefore care should be taken to ensure data collection processes, and their inevitable limitations are considered when interpreting the data.
Your attention is drawn to the below which details your right of complaint.
