FREEDOM OF INFORMATION REQUEST REFERENCE NO: 139-2025
I write in connection with your request for information which was received on 31st January 2025 as follows:
Would it be possible to find out –
The total number of reported crimes to your force involving adolescent-to-parent violence and abuse (APVA) or child-parent violence and abuse (CPVA) in 2015. This is where the victim is the parent/guardian of the offender.
The total number of reported crimes to your force involving adolescent-to-parent violence and abuse (APVA) or child-parent violence and abuse (CPVA) in 2019. This is where the victim is the parent/guardian of the offender.
The total number of reported crimes to your force involving adolescent-to-parent violence and abuse (APVA) or child-parent violence and abuse (CPVA) in 2023. (I'm assuming there would be no data available yet for 2024). This is where the victim is the parent/guardian of the offender.
APVA falls under the wider category of domestic violence and I appreciate not all forces may record specific data for APVA.
And to clarify, I am looking for statistics for the calendar years, not financial years.
Clarification
On 4th February 2025 a request for clarification was sent to you as follows:
Please be advised that there is currently no specific crime, flag, or marker on the Crime Recording System in relation to APVA or CPVA. There is a field within the Crime Recording System for relationship, which is located within the suspect person record. This should therefore show the suspect’s relationship to the victim; for example, where a suspect is the son of the victim, the relationship should show as ‘son’.
As you have indicated that APVA and CPVA falls under the wider category of domestic abuse, it may be possible to search for all crimes recorded in calendar years 2019 and 2023, that have an included classification of 'Domestic Abuse Investigation' and where the suspect to victim relationship is recorded as either:
Daughter
Son
Stepdaughter
Stepson
However, as the relationship field is populated manually from a drop-down menu that is subject to human error, any results using this method cannot be considered entirely accurate.
Due to system changes, crime data for statistical purposes is only available from January 2018 onwards and so it would not be possible to provide data from 2015. However, I can advise that crime data is available for 2024.
In view of the above, please advise how you wish to proceed with your information request.
On 5th February 2025, you advised:
Many thanks for your detailed response, I really appreciate that.
If it’s possible to gather data for 2018 and 2023 that would be great – don’t worry about 2024 because I’ve asked all forces for 2023 now so I will stick to that as the closest year. To be consistent!
I can also note that this is not going to be 100% accurate!
But if you can provide the information within the scope of costs then I’d be very grateful.
Sorry I meant 2019 and 2023!
On 5th February 2025 further clarification was requested as follows:
I must apologise for having to request further information from you, however it has come to my attention today that I should have queried whether the suspect ages need to be considered in relation to your request, as you have specifically talked about ‘adolescent to parent’ and ‘child to parent’ violence.
Should we be searching for crimes where the suspects are under 18 only?
If so, do you require the results to be split into two groups to show the number for suspects aged 0 to 10 years to represent ‘child’ and the number for suspects aged 10 to 17 years to represent ‘adolescents’, or something else?
In addition, as you have specifically mentioned ‘violence’, can I also check whether you are asking for crimes classified under the Home Office Crime category ‘Violence against the person’ or are you wanting all crime categories, or something else?
For example, to incorporate the above elements, the request could be revised to:
The number of crimes classified under Home Office Crime Category ‘Violence Against the Person’ recorded in calendar year 2019 and calendar year 2023, that have an included classification of 'Domestic Abuse Investigation', and where the suspect is aged under 18 (17 or under), and the suspect to victim relationship is recorded as either: Daughter, Son, Stepdaughter, or Stepson.
For both years, please provide the number broken down by suspects aged 0 to10 years and suspects aged 11 to 17 years.
We will wait to hear from you on how you wish to proceed with your request.
On 5th February 2025 you advised:
Your reworded request would work perfectly!
If it is do-able without a fee.
If it’s tricky then “under 18” may suffice… but you may have different age
categories… I’ll take your advice!
Please find the Warwickshire Police response set out below.
Response: A search was conducted for all crimes recorded under Home Office Crime Class - Violence Against the Person, with an included non-crime classification of Domestic Abuse Investigation, recorded in 2019 and 2023. The results were then filtered for crimes with at least one suspect role recorded aged 17 or under. These results were further filtered to where the ‘suspect relationship to victim’ field contained either son, daughter, stepson or stepdaughter. However, please note that as the relationship field is populated manually from a drop-down menu that is subject to human error, any results using this method cannot be considered entirely accurate.
