FREEDOM OF INFORMATION REQUEST REFERENCE NO: 185-2025
I write in connection with your request for information which was received on 10th February 2025 as follows:
Please can you provide the total number of charges brought for the following offences recorded in your force area, by calendar year, from 2021 onwards.
Driving without due care
Driving without reasonable consideration Driving while under the influence of alcohol Driving while under the influence of drugs Exceeding statutory speed limit on a public road
On 11th February 2025 we contacted you as follows:
Please be advised that speeding offences are dealt with by way of Notice of Intended Prosecution (NIP) not charge. Following the issuing of a NIP, and once a driver is identified and depending on the circumstances, the driver will either get a fine and points on their licence, get offered a driver retraining course, or go to court.
In addition, whilst there may be charges for Careless Driving and Driving without reasonable consideration, these may also be dealt with by way of NIP at times.
The only offences that will solely be dealt with by way of charge/summons/postal requisition are driving under the influence of drink and drugs.
Please advise how you wish to proceed with your request in relation to speeding offences, and also in relation to the other offences that may not always be dealt with by way of a charge.
On 11th February you provided the following clarification:
For speeding offences, I am happy to go with the suggested metric of NIPs issued. For driving without due care/reasonable consideration, if your view is that a NIP is the most sensible metric for these offences then I am happy to go with that.
Please find the Warwickshire Police response set out below. When reviewing the information please note that the figures provided represent the following:
Driving without due care – Fixed Penalty Notices (FPNs) issued
Driving without reasonable consideration – Fixed Penalty Notices (FPNs) issued
Drink and drug driving offences – Charges
Exceeding statutory speed limit on a public road – Notice of Intended Prosecution (NIPs) issued
