FREEDOM OF INFORMATION REQUEST REFERENCE NO: 563-2024
I write in connection with your request for information which was received on 12th June 2024 as follows:
Does the force have a policy of preventing legal representatives from entering the custody suite front desk area in its police stations (the booking and charging area for suspects, where the custody sergeants are based)?
Please find the Warwickshire Police response set out below.
Response: Warwickshire Police do not hold a policy in relation to preventing legal representatives from entering the custody suite front desk area. Our response is therefore ‘no information held’.
Outside of the Act, I can advise the following:
The custody area is a controlled environment with a variety of detainees, partner agencies, staff and support staff. Each detainee is managed according to their own individual needs and is afforded privacy whilst we are dealing with them. There are many situations in custody which require the temporary restriction of people in or around the front desk area; however, this is not restricted to legal representatives and applies to any person not connected and dealing with the matter presented. Circumstances could involve, for example, detainees being booked into custody for incidents of a sensitive nature, detainees with specific vulnerabilities, violent detainees, or those in need of urgent medical care etc. The reasons for controlling the environment are wide ranging and assessed on a case-by-case basis.
Every effort has been made to ensure that the information provided is as accurate as possible.
Your attention is drawn to the below which details your right of complaint.
Should you have any further enquiries concerning this matter, please write or email the Freedom of Information Unit quoting the reference number above.
Yours sincerely
