FREEDOM OF INFORMATION REQUEST REFERENCE NO: FOI-118-2024

 

I write in connection with your request for information which was received on 26^th January 2024 as follows:

 

1. The total number of drivers caught exceeding the speed limit in your force area, broken down by year for 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023.

 

2. The number of drivers caught exceeding the speed limit in your force area, broken down by speed limit, broken down by year for 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023.

 

3. The total number of drivers caught exceeding the speed limit in your force area, broken down by age and  for 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023.

 

Please accept my sincere apologies for the delay in providing the response to your request and for any inconvenience this may have caused you.  Please find the Warwickshire Police response set out below.

 

When reviewing the information please note the following:

 

• For Q1, the figures relate to the number of offences and hence notices issued.

 

• For Q2, the speed limit has been broken down by the variable speed also.  It is worth noting that the figures vary greatly from year to year due to the pandemic and temporary roadwork schemes in place.

 

• For Q3, there is no information held for ages for 2019 as this has now been removed. 

 

There are also a number of ages which have been returned as ‘blank’ and shown on the table as ‘unknown’.  This can be for reasons such as the offence being cancelled, or where the offender has been taken to Court; a date of birth will be obtained but the system will not necessarily have been updated with the information.  In order to determine where this is the case it would be necessary to conduct a manual review of all cases where the age has been returned ‘blank’.  Given the number involved this would take over 18 hours and exceed the fees limit to which we are legally required to respond i.e. the cost of locating and retrieving the information exceeds the ‘appropriate level’ as stated in the Freedom of Information (Fees and Appropriate Limit) Regulations 2004.

 

Also offences from the latter part of 2023 will still be in progress and not yet disposed of.
