FREEDOM OF INFORMATION REQUEST REFERENCE NO: 491-2024
I write in connection with your request for information which was received on 8th May 2024 as follows:
Request for Information under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 in regard to thresholds for reporting crime, including anti-social behaviour and road traffic violations.
I am submitting an information request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000.
I wish to seek information regarding the thresholds for reporting crime, including anti-social behaviour, road traffic violations and trespass. It is the right of all members of the public to report crime and for that report to be followed up by the relevant police force. However, there are recent incidents that are making it difficult for the public to rely on the Warwickshire police force and therefore clarification is required. There are procedures in place that all forces are required to follow, regardless of the perpetrator. It is these procedures for which I require further information as listed below.
The thresholds for reporting crimes relating to anti-social behaviour and road safety.
What the procedure is during and proceeding the reporting of anti-social behaviour and road safety violations.
Please find the Warwickshire Police response set out below.
Response: Where you have asked for 'thresholds for reporting crimes', I can advise that any individual can make a report to Warwickshire Police. I can also advise that the Warwickshire Police website has information regarding reporting entitled ‘what happens when I report a crime’, which you may find useful and can be viewed at the following link:
https://www.warwickshire.police.uk/advice/advice-and-information/acr/after-you-report-a-crime
I can also advise that there is no specific offence of ASB, a report for ASB can be made; however, any offences recorded linked to that report would depend on circumstances, for example, a member of the public could call Warwickshire Police reporting ASB and when officers attend they find a window has been smashed, in that case the resulting offence (crime) would likely be recorded as 'criminal damage'.
Whether any given reported incident is subsequently recorded as a crime is dependent on individual factors and undertaken on a case-by-case basis.
With regard to thresholds for recording crime, this is determined by the Home Office Counting Rules, please see the below link for further information:
Every effort has been made to ensure that the information provided is as accurate as possible.
Your attention is drawn to the below which details your right of complaint.
Should you have any further enquiries concerning this matter, please write or email the Freedom of Information Unit quoting the reference number above.
Yours sincerely
