FREEDOM OF INFORMATION REQUEST REFERENCE NO: FOI-417-2024
I write in connection with your request for information which was received on 14th April 2024 as follows:
I am writing to submit a request under the Freedom of Information Act regarding the reported instances of financial crime and financial fraud within your city. My aim is to gain insights into the prevalence and nature of these incidents in your city, contributing to a broader understanding of financial crime trends within the region.
Accordingly, I request the following information:
Total Number of Reported Cases: Please provide the total number of reported cases of financial crimes and financial fraud in your city for the period from 2020 to 2024.
Year-on-Year Trends: An annual comparison detailing the number of reported cases for each year within the requested timeframe, to identify potential trends in the occurrence of financial crimes and fraud within your city.
Please accept my sincere apologies for the delay in providing the response to your request and for any inconvenience that this may have caused you. Please find the Warwickshire Police response set out below.
Response: Please be advised that the requested information is not held in a readily retrievable format as fraud crimes are not sub-classified into categories which would enable extraction of the requested information. Searches were conducted for all offences with a Primary or Included Offence Title ‘Crime Investigation – Action Fraud: Call for Service’ or ‘Crime Investigation – Action Fraud: NFIB Referral’ recorded between 1 January 2020 and 17 April 2024. This search produced a total of 2479 records and, in order to identify any offences involving financial fraud, it would be necessary to review the records on an individual basis. At 3 minutes per record this would equate to 124 hours of work and; therefore, above the amount of work to which we are legally required to undertake i.e. the cost of locating and retrieving the information exceeds the ‘appropriate level’ (£450) as stated in the Freedom of Information (Fees and Appropriate Limit) Regulations 2004.
In accordance s12(1) of the Freedom of Information Act 2000, this letter acts as a Refusal Notice for this request.
In accordance with Section 16 of the Act I have a duty to provide advice and assistance in relation to your request; however due to the amount of records involved, I am unable to suggest a way to revise your request into one which could be answered within the fees limit.
However, I can advise that fraud offences are now recorded by Action Fraud who do further classify fraud crimes into specific categories. You may wish to approach Action Fraud, as the national fraud reporting centre, in relation to the information requested.
