FREEDOM OF INFORMATION REQUEST REFERENCE NO: FOI-896-2023
I write in connection with your request for information which was received on 28th September 2023, and clarification received on 17th October 2023, as follows:
(1) The number of crimes recorded as 'Domestic Abuse' broken down by the
Gender of the Victim.
(2) The number of incidents (not registered as crimes) recorded as 'Domestic Abuse' broken down by the Gender of the Victim.
We understand that gender may be recorded on your systems as Male,
Female or Unknown/Other, and that level of information is fine.
If you can only provide one answer because of your collection method,
then that this is acceptable however can you please confirm if you are
providing crimes or incidents.
This request is to cover the period from 1st April 2022 to 31st March 2023.
On 29th September 2023, we requested the following clarification from you:
Regarding Q1 - Please be advised that there is no offence of 'domestic abuse'. Where domestic abuse is believed to be a factor in a crime, an included classification of 'non-crime domestic abuse investigation' is added. Therefore, for Q1, please clarify that you are requesting the number of crimes which have been recorded with an included classification of 'domestic abuse investigation'?
In relation to the victim breakdown, please note that this will be for each crime recorded with a 'domestic abuse investigation' classification added, irrespective of whether an individual has been a repeat victim.
Regarding Q2 - Where a domestic incident has been attended, but no offences have been identified, then a 'non-crime domestic abuse investigation' is recorded as the primary classification. In such cases, all relevant individuals are recorded as 'involved parties' and, as such, there are no victim/suspect roles.
Please clarify if you therefore require just the number of 'non-crime' Domestic Abuse Investigations, recorded for the specified period?
On 17th October 2023, you provided the following clarification :
Thank you for your response requesting clarity. We understand this is a difficult process as different forces capture data using different methodology.
Q1. I can confirm that we do require the number of Crimes which have an included classification of 'domestic abuse investigation' broken down by victim gender irrespective of whether an individual has been a repeat victim.
Q2.I can confirm that we would also like the number of 'non-crime' Domestic Abuse Investigations, recorded for the specified period regardless of Gender if you do not capture at that level.
Q1 response: Searches were conducted for all crimes, recorded during the stated period, where there is an included classification of ‘Domestic Abuse Investigation’, this produced a total of 7035 offences. Of those, 6856 have one or more victim roles attached and the breakdown by gender is set out in the table below. Please note that in some instances there is more than one victim on a crime, and in others there is no victim role present.
