FREEDOM OF INFORMATION REQUEST REFERENCE NO: FOI-1072-2023
I write in connection with your request for information which was received on 22nd November 2023, and clarification received on the same date, as follows:
Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 I would like to gain access to data of the total number of police forces that are using video doorbell footage as evidence for theft and home burglaries in the Warwickshire area in each month of 2022 and 2023.
Just to clarify I am asking for the number of thefts and burglaries, recorded by Warwickshire Police in 2022 and 2023, with video doorbell footage evidence.
Please find the Warwickshire Police response set out below.
Response: Please be advised that the requested information is not held centrally and is not available in a readily retrievable format. In order to determine such information it would be necessary to examine each and every Theft offence and Residential Burglary offence investigation, recorded during the stated period. An indication of the time involved in such searches is shown when we consider that, during 2022 alone, there were 1459 Residential Burglaries recorded and, at 5 minutes per investigation to determine whether Ring doorbell footage was used as evidence, this would equate to in excess of 121 hours of work. Added to this would then be Theft offences and all searches for 2023. Therefore, the time involved is above the amount of work to which we are legally required to undertake i.e. the cost of locating and retrieving the information exceeds the ‘appropriate level’ as stated in the Freedom of Information (Fees and Appropriate Limit) Regulations 2004.
In accordance with s12(1) of the Freedom of Information Act 2000, this letter acts as a Refusal Notice for this request.
In accordance with Section 16 of the Act I have a duty to provide advice and assistance; however, due to the volume of records involved I am unable to suggest a way to revise your request into one which could be answered within the fees limit.
Every effort has been made to ensure that the information provided is as accurate as possible.
Your attention is drawn to the below which details your right of complaint.
Should you have any further enquiries concerning this matter, please write or email the Freedom of Information Unit quoting the reference number above.
Yours sincerely
