FREEDOM OF INFORMATION REQUEST REFERENCE NO: 345-2023
I write in connection with your request for information which was received on 30th March as follows:
Strip search of children in England and Wales – analysis by the Children’s Commissioner for England
March 2023
Table 1. Number of strip searches conducted per police force area (PFA) and region (page 30)
The "Number of searches" for your force was 13.
I see that you provided no data for Table 4 - Home Office experimental statistics of searches conducted on children in custody, 2020-21 (page 57)
Please accept my sincere apologies for the delay in providing the response to your request and for any inconvenience this may have caused. Please find the Warwickshire Police response set out below.
Response: Please be advised that, whilst the report referred to in the request describes ‘strip searches’, the 13 that are recorded for Warwickshire Police relate to searches of children under stop and search powers, and where more thorough, intimate part searches have been carried out (MTIP). These are recorded as part of the stop and search procedure, and do not refer to strip searches, which are carried out in custody. The figures below will therefore refer to these more thorough searches of children under stop and search powers.
Q1 response: Drugs and bladed article.
Q2 response: 8, however, please note that if an individual has gone on to have a strip search in custody, additional illegal items may have been found.
Q3 response: In relation to 7 individuals, the details of an appropriate adult present during the search was recorded on the stop and search database. In relation to the remaining 6 individuals no details relating to an appropriate adult was recorded, however, this does not necessarily mean that an appropriate adult was not present.
Q4 response: Yes
Every effort has been made to ensure that the information provided is as accurate as possible.
