FREEDOM OF INFORMATION REQUEST REFERENCE NO: FOI-631-2023
I write in connection with your request for information which was received on 28th June 2023 as follows:
I am requesting a yearly breakdown of the total number of stolen caravans and motorhomes reported to your police force during the past four years.
Can you provide me with:
A yearly breakdown of the total number of caravans and motorhomes reported as stolen.
Could you please provide a breakdown for the past four years, including 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022? (alternatively, please provide the statistics for the financial years 2019-20, 2020-21, 2021-22, 2022-23 if that’s easier)
Please find the Warwickshire Police response set out below.
Response: Please be advised that there is no identifier on the crime recording system for theft of caravans or motorhomes. In order to determine such information, it would be necessary to individually examine all ‘Theft’ offences in relation to caravans and ‘Theft or Unauthorised Taking of Motor Vehicle’ offences in relation to Motorhomes. This equates to thousands of offences and such searches would take an inordinate amount of time which would exceed the amount to which we are legally required to respond i.e. the cost of locating and retrieving the information exceeds the ‘appropriate level’ as stated in the Freedom of Information (Fees and Appropriate Limit) Regulations 2004.
In accordance with s12(1) of the Freedom of Information Act 2000, this letter acts as a Refusal Notice for this request.
In accordance with Section 16 of the Act I have a duty to provide advice and assistance; however, I am unable to suggest a way to reduce your request into one which could be managed within the fees limit.
However, in order to provide assistance, the business area conducted a search of all offences, recorded between 01/01/2019 and 31/12/2022, where a keyword ‘caravan’ or ‘Motor Home’ / ‘Motorhome’ and ‘Campervan’ / ‘Camper van’ is present within the MO Description / Investigation Summary field. The resulting records were then reviewed for relevance.
The information retrieved is set out below as a gesture of goodwill; however, it is important to note that in the event that there are further relevant offences recorded, but where the keywords are not present within the MO Description / Investigation Summary, then these will not have been returned within the search. For this reason information retrieved by way of a keyword search cannot be assumed to be entirely accurate. As set out above, providing an accurate response would exceeds the fees limit.
Please note that where ‘Motor Caravan’ has been located, this has been included in the figures for Motorhomes.
