FREEDOM OF INFORMATION REQUEST REFERENCE NO: 158-2023
I write in connection with your request for information which was received on 6th February 2023 as follows:
This is a request under the Freedom of Information Act. I am undertaking an exploratory study into the recruitment of candidates with neuro diversity characteristics in the police forces in England and Wales. I am asking for the following data in the chart below along with the supplementary questions below. I am defining neurodiversity conditions as; Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Autism, Dyspraxia, Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, Dysgraphia, and Tourette's syndrome. No personally identifiable data is requested, just statistics on the number of officers who have these conditions.

2021-2022 |
Please state whether your data is collected by financial year, or calendar year.
1) Number of police officers in the force currently with disclosed neurodiversity conditions?
2) What adjustments are available to support police officers with neurodiversity conditions?
Response: Please be advised that, with regard to officer applicants, the requested information is not held. Applicants are not asked specifically about neurodiversity, they are only asked if they have a disability and if they require a reasonable adjustment.
With regard to officers recruited, information in relation to neurodiversity would only be recorded if the officer requested it to be and/or where the condition required any adjustment. However, in order to determine the number of officers where a neurodiverse condition is recorded, it would be necessary to examine the personal records of each officer on an individual basis. Such searches would exceed the cost threshold (£450) which equates to 18 hours work at a standard rate of £25 per hour, as stated in the Freedom of Information (Fees and Appropriate Limit) Regulations 2004.
In accordance with section 12(1) of the Freedom of Information Act 2000, this letter acts as a Refusal Notice for this part of the request and, if one part of a request exceeds the fees limit, then section 12 of the Act applies to the whole request.
Under Section 16 of the Act I have a duty to provide advice and assistance and can advise that it may be possible to retrieve information in relation to the number of applicants and the number recruited as standalone information.
Every effort has been made to ensure that the information provided is as accurate as possible.
Your attention is drawn to the below which details your right of complaint.
Should you have any further enquiries concerning this matter, please write or email the Freedom of Information Unit quoting the reference number above.
Yours sincerely
