FREEDOM OF INFORMATION REQUEST REFERENCE NO: 731-2023
I write in connection with your request for information which was received on 8th August 2023
How many motorists have received driving bans or penalty points after being caught using a mobile phone at the wheel in the past five years?
Please could this information be broken down by year ie by 12 months periods between 2018 to 2023 in whichever way is most convenient (Jan-Dec or April to April if that’s how figures are collected)
Please find the Warwickshire Police response set out below.
Response: Please find the number of notices issued for using a mobile phone at the wheel. When reviewing the information please note that in March 2022 the law changed, meaning that anyone found using a mobile phone is fined (minimum £200) and 6 points added to their licence. Prior to this, anyone found using their mobile could be offered a course, fined, or sent to Court.
With regard to driving bans, if an offender did not pay the fine then they could be sent to Court and banned from driving; however, this would be for the Court to decide, and the results of those cases are not known to us.
Use a handheld mobile phone / device while driving a motor vehicle on a road - endorsable offence |
