FREEDOM OF INFORMATION REQUEST REFERENCE NO: 666-2021
I write in connection with your request for information which was received on 29th July 2021 as follows:
Can you please state how many police officers have been victims of a crime in the past five years?
Can you please break it down per year?
And can you please indicate how many incidents there have been, in each year, for each offence?
I'm particularly keen to know how many officers have been the victim of GBH, attempted murder and murder over the past five years.
I'd still like these broken down over the past five years please.
If you need to focus on these specific offences, that is acceptable.
Please accept my sincere apologies for the delay in providing the response to your request and for any inconvenience this may have caused. Please find the Warwickshire Police response set out below.
Response:
When reviewing the information contained in the below table, please note that it was obtained by searching for offences of ‘Assault on a Constable With Injury’, ‘Assault on a Constable Without Injury’ and Murder/Attempted Murder in relation to police officers who have been victims whilst on duty.
The offence of ‘Assault on a Constable With Injury’ also encompasses offences of GBH; however, in order to determine those which were specifically GBH, it would be necessary to review each and every record on an individual basis. During the stated period there were 374 such offences and, at a minimum of 4 minutes per record, this would take in excess of 25 hours of work. This would be above the amount to which we are legally required to respond i.e. the cost of locating and retrieving the information exceeds the ‘appropriate level’ as stated in the Freedom of Information (Fees and Appropriate Limit) Regulations 2004.
With regard to offences in relation to Murder/Attempted Murder, this was obtained by filtering results to show where the victim occupation was ‘Police Service’. However, please note that the occupation field is not always completed and therefore there may possibly be cases that are relevant to your request which may not have been returned within the search. As above, in order to be certain that all information has been captured it would be necessary to examine each and every Murder/Attempted Murder during the stated period.
