In November 2018 a law was passed - the Assaults on Emergency Workers (Offences) Act 2018. This makes assaults against emergency workers (such as NHS workers, police, prison guards and fire personnel) more serious and gives courts power to double prison sentences of anyone convicted of such an offence to a maximum of 12 months.
