Right now, we’re looking for talented individuals to join our new Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship (PCDA) programme. This is a three-year training course where you’ll be paid to work for us as a Police Constable whilst spending some of your time also studying for a fully-funded university degree in Professional Policing Practice.

There are also some eligibility requirements that we ask for.

Academic requirements:

To be eligible for the Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship, you need to have achieved:

    • Level 2 qualifications in both English and Maths, such as a GCSE at grade C (Level 4) or above, or Functional Skills Level 2 and Key Skills Level 2 (Communication and/or Literacy) and:
    • Level 3 qualifications in any subject(s) that equate to 64 UCAS points (or a full Level 4 or 5 qualification). These points could be from your A Levels, Level 3 Diplomas, NVQs or an International Baccalaureate, to name a few.

You can apply if you have been predicted at least 84 UCAS points, but you will need to evidence your final results of 64 points prior to joining Warwickshire Police.

(You will need to attach copies of all relevant certificates at an early stage of your application, however please do not let this stop you from completing the form to register your interest).

Candidates must also:

  • Be aged 18 years or over
  • Possess a full UK manual driving licence
  • Be a European Economic Area (EEA) National or a Swiss National. Commonwealth citizens and Foreign Nationals are also eligible to apply but are required to have leave to enter or leave to remain in the UK for an indefinite period
  • Have resided in the UK for three consecutive years immediately prior to application
  • Be physically fit, meet the police recruitment medical standards and have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of between 18-30, although if your BMI falls outside of this range, this may not preclude you
  • Meet the police eyesight standards
  • Not have tattoos on your face or the front of your neck, or any which could cause offence to members of the public or colleagues. Other visible tattoos such as on the back of the neck, forearms and hands, will be permissible as long as they are deemed to be appropriate and inoffensive, maintaining a professional image. These will be assessed on a case by case basis.
  • Not have applied to become a police constable and been unsuccessful at any stage of the Police National SEARCH Assessment process in the last six months with any force

If you have a criminal record, this doesn't mean that cannot you apply. It depends on the nature of your conviction. However, we ask you to please declare any and all cautions or convictions on your application form (including those spent). For example, fixed penalty notices, traffic offences or any other involvement with the police must be declared.

Why do police officers need a degree?

The nature of police work has changed. The degree has been introduced nationally to recognise the enormously high level of skills, learning and professionalism required to become a police officer and to carry out the role.

The new curriculum for the apprenticeship entry route has been designed to match the complexity of modern policing, recognising that police officers apply transferable skills and problem solving skills to a range of complex situations, and regularly exercise personal judgement. New topics introduced to the curriculum include digital investigation, evidence based policing, problem solving, vulnerability and personal wellbeing and resilience.

Do I have to apply for a university place separately to the police application?

No, you will apply to Warwickshire Police and we will work with Staffordshire University to enrol you as a student.


Can I choose which university I go to?

No, we will be working closely with Staffordshire University to deliver and award your degree. 

Do I have to attend university for lectures?

No you do not need to attend lectures at Staffordshire University and you will not have to travel out of the force area.

How often will I have to study?

The student officer programme requires a minimum of 20% off the job academic learning, which we will factor into your working hours. You will probably study in your own time too. 

Will I have to study for exams?

The new student officer programme does not require you to take exams, as you will achieve your degree by completing assignment work and demonstrating your skills on the job.

I haven’t yet got my A Level or BTEC results. Can I apply based on predicted results?

Yes, you can apply if you have been predicted at least 84 UCAS points, but you will need to evidence your final results of 64 points prior to joining Warwickshire Police.

Is the degree free or do I have to pay any part of it?

Yes, your degree is fully paid for by Warwickshire Police.

What is the starting salary?

We will appoint student police officers on an annual starting salary of £21,525, rising to over £25,000 by year 3. 

Warwickshire Police will also be funding your degree, meaning that you will not have to pay back a student loan.

Can I still do part-time work while I am studying?

You will be working as a full-time officer with the requirement to undertake additional study, so you will have limited time available. 

Will I be able to arrest from day one?

You will not be sworn in and gain powers of arrest until you have successfully completed sufficient training.

How does the application process work?

Some say the best things in life come to those who wait….we need to ensure this role meets your expectations and that you meet ours, and so the application process to join the police can be a lengthy as it has six key stages.

Stage 1: Online form to register your interest

Complete the online form to register your interest. There are two stages to complete: an eligibility test and behaviour styles test.

Stage 2: Online application form

Following completion of the pre-application process, you will be sent an email which links to the online application form by the Recruitment Team. They will check the application to ensure they have all the information they require and that you are eligible to apply. 

Stage 3: Online assessment centre

This online assessment centre consists of three elements: a situational judgement test, an interview and written assignments.

Stage 4: Force interview

Applicants will be asked to attend a panel interview which lasts 30-45 minutes.

Stage 5: Pre-employment checks

If successful at the interview, you will start your pre-employment checks. These can take up to eight weeks to complete, but this can vary for each applicant. You will be required to complete a medical questionnaire, eyesight test form and online vetting forms in advance.

The pre-employment checks require applicants to attend the following:

  • Medical appointment with our Occupational Health team who will review your completed medical questionnaire and eyesight test form and complete height and weight, lung capacity and hearing tests. There will also be mandatory biometric vetting (DNA and fingerprints) carried out at this appointment by the Recruitment Team
  • Job related fitness test
  • Uniform fitting

At the same time as the medical review is being completed, we will also process the following checks:

  • Vetting
  • Biometrics clearance
  • References

Stage 6: Offer of employment

Once you have successfully completed all of these previous stages, you will be placed on a waiting list to be offered the post of Student Police Officer as part of our next cohort of students.
