With just two weeks left to apply for this year’s police cadets scheme, 16-year-old Yash has written about his perspective of being a cadet.
“Five years ago, I would have never expected that I was going to become a cadet. But let me tell you, being a cadet has been an unforgettable experience. It’s more than just a hobby, it’s a journey of learning, growth, and forming lifelong friendships. From day one, I’ve had the chance to dive into activities that have helped me grow as a person and build incredible memories with my fellow cadets and cadet leaders.
“As cadets, we are constantly learning valuable life skills. Whether it’s how to conduct CPR or organising volunteering events, these lessons have prepared me for real-world situations.
“One of the best things about being a cadet is the range of experiences you have. I’ve witnessed speed-watch sessions, learned about trading standards and stepped inside custody cells. No two sessions are ever the same. We’ve had several guest speakers including police dog handlers, which has opened my eyes to other areas of law enforcement and community service.
“Friendships formed within our cohort during training sessions, events, and our Christmas parties have created a strong sense of belonging and community and are another key highlight to the scheme.
“Looking back on the past two years, I’m so proud of everything I’ve achieved and learnt. It has been so rewarding and I’m excited for what the future holds.
“Being a cadet is about more than just wearing a uniform and attending sessions, it’s about giving back to the community, learning critical life skills, and building confidence. If you’re looking for an opportunity to develop further and meet amazing new people, while be part of something beneficial, joining cadets is an experience you’ll never regret.”
The police cadets is a scheme for 13-16 year olds who live or go to school in Warwickshire, which offers them an opportunity to gain a practical understanding of policing, develop their spirit of adventure and good citizenship. Applications are open until 28 February.
