On the evening of Thursday 23 November 2023, Aran Bailey and companion were seen greeting two men in Nuneaton town centre amicably, before moments later striking one of them over the head with a knife.
At 9:30pm, the group of four met each other on Queens Road, and after what appeared on CCTV to be a friendly conversation walked in the direction of Queens Road together.
Only a minute later, outside a restaurant on Queens Road, Bailey had a disagreement with one of the men, and struck him on the top-left side of his head with a large knife, causing significant injury.
The victim later received hospital treatment, including stitches for the wound.
Following this, Bailey made off down Queens Road, and police were called to the scene by a member of staff at the restaurant who had witnessed the altercation take place.
After being identified, Bailey was arrested on 6 December.
Aran Bailey, 20 of Lyttleton Road in Warwick, was sentenced to seven years and three months in a youth offender institution.
This was on charges of possessing a knife in a public place and grievous bodily harm (GBH) wounding with intent
Bailey is also required to pay a victims’ surcharge of £228.
He was sentenced at Warwick Crown Court.
DI Paul Sartoris said “Bailey participated in a random act of violence towards someone who, only moments before, had greeted him as a friend.
“He made no attempt to justify or apologise for his actions in interview.
“This was a reprehensible act; we hope that Bailey can realise what he has done and correct the course his life is on.”
