The team were praised for working with partners like the mental health Liaison and Diversion Team (LiDi) and Youth Justice to provide a custody environment that was neurodiverse-aware, forward thinking, and which treated all detainees as individuals with proper care provided.
Improvements to custody were evidence-driven based on data around peak flow times, average time in custody, search compliance, and provisions for children and young people, among others.
A child-friendly green room in the suite, photography from rural Warwickshire along the walls and improved availability of distractions like a small library and stress balls to use in the cells are some of the small changes implemented.
A bail management app further supports the team to ensure compliance with current bail legislation and consider welfare of detainees.
The NPCC’s National Custody Awards were held on Thursday 26 September.
