A man arrested within 10 minutes of a break in at a house in Blackhorse Road, Longford, Coventry has been jailed for 42 months.
Officers on patrol in the area arrested David Mumford after they spotted a suspicious vehicle on nearby Sephton Drive in the early hours of 7 November.
Our investigation showed that he broke through the lock on the rear door and stole the key to a BMW.
As our officers approached the car, one male ran off, and Mumford got into the driver’s seat before attempting to lock the doors and drive off.
Mumford was wearing gloves and was in possession of a balaclava. The car keys were attached to the house keys from the house on Blackhorse Road.
David Mumford, 40 of Catherine Street in Coventry, has been jailed for 18 months and is required to pay a victim’s surcharge of £228.
In total, he will be in prison for 42 months after activating a previous suspended sentence order.
He is also subject to a two-year disqualification from owning a driving license.
Mumford pleaded guilty to burglary, possession of cannabis, using a motor vehicle without insurance, and driving while disqualified.
Mumford was sentenced at Warwick Crown Court on 28 November.
Investigating officer Detective Constable Samir Hassan said “Mumford was caught red-handed in a stolen vehicle within ten minutes of the burglary having taken place, parked up less than half a mile away from the house he had stolen from.
“This should be the wake-up call that Mumford needs to find a new career – one that he might be better at, and preferably one that doesn’t involve exploiting our communities.”
