The Nuneaton Safer Neighbourhood Team working with Nuneaton Borough Council have been successful in obtaining a closure order for Warwick House, a residential property on Bond Gate, Nuneaton.
The order, which came into force yesterday (Tuesday 26 November), has been enacted to prevent “disorderly, offensive, or criminal behaviour on the premises; serious nuisance to members of the public; and disorder near the property associated with the use of the property.”
Since 2023, there have been five deaths at Warwick House, of which four were confirmed to be drug related.
Some of the residents were found to be linked to antisocial behaviour issues in the town centre, and some are believed to have committed offences in Warwick House, putting other residents and neighbours at risk.
Many of the property’s residents were vulnerable members of the community with additional needs in relation to their mental health and required medical support.
Our partners in the local housing authority have stepped in to ensure that those residents are rehoused appropriately and given the support that they need.
The closure order means that, under Section 86 of the Antisocial Behaviour, Crime, and Policing Act of 2014, any person found inside the premises faces up to 51 weeks in prison.
In the process of enacting the closure order, a 44-year-old man of no fixed abode was arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply class A drugs and possession of a knife.
Inspector Ryan Walker of Nuneaton & Bedworth Safer Neighbourhood Team said “There was no way we could sit idly by and allow Warwick House to continue to operate in a way that was proving damaging to both tenants and the community in Nuneaton.
“The closure of Warwick House had to happen, and now the next stage of the process is ensuring vulnerable residents are properly rehoused and supported.”
A Nuneaton & Bedworth Borough Council spokesperson said “We confirm this was a Police led initiative however, the Borough Council is happy to support them given the significantly detrimental issues experienced at the property, which is operated by My Space Housing Solutions.
"This initiative, along with our support to the Police, demonstrates that all partners are alert to the issues being experienced and will work together to tackle those issues.”
