Shoplifter jailed for assaulting police officer in Nuneaton

A Nuneaton shoplifter who assaulted a police officer as he attempted to arrest him has been jailed.
Jonathan Laws, 40, of no fixed abode, punched the officer in the face as he attempted to arrest him in Riversley Park on suspicion of shoplifting on 21 October.
He was wanted for the theft of alcohol and food from shops in Nuneaton town centre.
Laws pleaded guilty to assaulting a police officer and two counts of theft and was jailed at Coventry Magistrates’ for 30 weeks.
Deputy Chief Constable Alex Franklin-Smith said: “Like everyone else, police officers do not deserve to be assaulted simply for doing their jobs. I hope Laws uses his time in prison to reflect on his actions.”
