Twenty-two year old Kye Betteridge from Franklin Road, Nuneaton is likely to lose his driving licence after being found guilty of Driving Without Due Care and Attention at Warwickshire Magistrates Court on 22 November 2022.
Kye who at the time of the incident had only passed his test two months previously, decided to drive along Arbury Road in Nuneaton on 28 April 2022 with someone clinging to the bonnet of his car.
A member of the public captured the incident and submitted moving footage to Warwickshire Police via Op Snap.
As a result Kye was sentenced to 6 points and an £80 fine plus £55 costs and a £34 victim surcharge. The defendant’s guilty plea was taken into consideration when imposing the sentence. However Kye can expect a call from the DVLA as the law clearly states that new drivers will have their licence cancelled (revoked) if you get 6 or more points within 2 years of passing your test.
PC Ken Bratley said ”Fortunately no one was injured in this incident, but do not mistake this for just a bit of fun. Sadly we have seen how similar incidents can end in tragedy with someone losing their life. Therefore we feel this sentence is light and Kye should feel extremely lucky that he is not facing a much more serious custodial sentence for causing death by careless or dangerous driving.
“Kye is learning the hard way and now will need to start again and retake his test.”
