What will happen at the police station?

The Custody Sergeant will take charge as soon as you arrive at the station. You will be informed of your Rights and Entitlements as soon as possible.

The Custody Sergeant must explain your rights. Your rights are:

  • free legal advice
  • tell someone where you are
  • have medical help if you're feeling ill
  • see the rules the police must follow ('Codes of Practice')
  • see a written notice telling you about your rights, (you can ask for a notice in your language) or an interpreter to explain the notice

You'll be searched and your possessions will be kept by the police custody officer if you are placed in a cell.

You will be interviewed.
