Warwickshire Police supports hate crime conference

As part of Hate Crime Awareness Week 2018, Warwickshire Police is supporting the Love Instead of Hate conference in Bedworth this weekend.

Everyone is welcome to the event which is taking place at the Life Church in Bulkington Road, between 10.00am and 3.30pm.

The conference aims to:

  • Raise awareness and reinforce messages about hate crime and the importance of reporting.
  • Encourage communities to speak out against hate and report incidents.
  • Empower and inspire people to be actively involved in combating hate within their own community.
  • Update communities about the work being undertaken in Warwickshire by Partners (You said, We did) and obtain ideas about new areas of work.

The event will be hosted by Trish Adudu from BBC Coventry and Warwickshire. Speakers include:

  • Dan Biddle, a survivor of the 7/7 London bombings. He will tell his inspirational story of resilience and ongoing personal battles.
  • Sylvia Lancaster OBE, whose daughter, Sophie, was murdered because of her appearance. Sylvia has set up a charity in Sophie's memory that aims to educate young people and encourage them to challenge prejudice and embrace difference.

There will be a mix of presentations and interactive sessions. There will also be stalls and displays from organisations including Victim Support, EquIP and Tell Mama.

Chief Inspector Faz Chishty said: "Hate crime doesn't just affect victims, it affects whole communities. This is an opportunity for these communities to come together and send a clear message that we will not tolerate hate and we will do everything we can to promote cohesion and embrace our differences.

"It promises to be an informative, interesting and hard hitting event and I would encourage anyone with a interest in addressing the issue of hate crime to come along."

Car parking is free and a buffet lunch will be provided.
