Man jailed for sexual offences against a child in Rugby

A Rugby man responsible for a 'campaign of rape' against a young girl has today (Friday 20 July) been jailed.

Carlos Mendez, 53, of Murray Road, Rugby, was sentenced after previously pleading guilty to two counts of raping a child, three counts of sexual activity with a child, one count of attempted buggery, one count of making an indecent image of a child, two counts of sexual activity with a child, one count of indecent assault, and one count of committing gross indecency.

Today at Warwickshire Crown Court he was jailed for 16 and a half years for the offences which occurred in the 2000s when the victim was aged between 11 and 15.

Detective Constable Paul Sartoris from Rugby CID said: "Firstly, I would like to recognise the bravery of the victim who has shown immense courage to report this crime and bravery throughout the investigation and legal proceedings.

"The judge rightly described his crimes as a 'campaign of rape' against his victim. The length of the sentence reflects the severity of the offences.

"This case demonstrates the importance of reporting all cases of sexual abuse, whether recent or non-recent. We will treat all reports of sexual crimes with the utmost seriousness and fully investigate them.

"The case should serve as a warning that sex offenders will be brought to justice for their crimes no matter when they occurred."
