The man, aged 24 and from Bedworth, was not found on Smorrall Lane but was later arrested on suspicion of rape when he presented himself at Nuneaton Justice Centre.

Smorrall Lane was shut between 10.45pm and 11.58pm.

Detective Inspector Neil Reader said: "We received the report of the rape yesterday (Sunday 21 January) morning and acting on intelligence the decision was taken to deploy armed officers to Smorrall Lane.

"Following negotiations with police officers a man presented himself at the Nuneaton Justice Centre and was arrested. No firearms were recovered.

"I'd like to thank people in their area around Smorrall Lane for their patience while we dealt with the incident."
