National Specials Weekend 2017

Warwickshire Police Special Constables will be on duty during National Specials Weekend, which runs from 3-4 June 2017, protecting people from harm, promoting the work of the Special Constabulary in local communities and encouraging people to volunteer as Special Constables.

Specials Constables are volunteers who commit a minimum of 16 hours a month and play a key role in local policing. They have the same powers in law as regular police officers, including the power of arrest.

National Specials Week is also part of Volunteers' Week 2017, and this ensures that volunteering in a policing context forms part of the wider, national focus on volunteering opportunities. National Specials Week is organised across England and Wales by the National Police Chiefs' Council, Citizens in Policing, the College of Policing and local police forces.

During National Specials Weekend Warwickshire Police Special Constables will be carrying out policing activities relevant to local needs, supporting community and neighbourhood issues. These will include:
• focusing on burglary hotspots
• targeting drugs, anti-social behaviour, car crime, burglaries
• tackling rural crime
• checking on car seat safety in Rugby
• combating anti-social motorcyclists, and
• carrying out a drugs operation in Leamington Spa.

Martin Jelley, Chief Constable of Warwickshire Police, said: "Special Constables play a key role in reducing crime and anti-social behaviour, and enable Warwickshire Police to strengthen our relationships with the communities we serve. As volunteers they are a visible and accessible presence, providing reassurance, and tackling crime and its effects on local people and businesses. National Specials Weekend is an ideal opportunity, therefore, to highlight the work and dedication of our Special Constables, and to encourage people who want to make a difference to join the Special Constabulary".
