A murder investigation has been launched after a 21-year-old man from Atherstone died following an incident in the town last night (Sunday 28 May).

At around 9.40pm, paramedics attended Barsby Close, Atherstone, where they found the man with serious injuries to his head and torso. They reported the incident to police.

The man was taken to hospital where he died at around about 10am this morning.

After the man was discovered, a 50-year-old man and 20-year-old man, both from Atherstone, were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and remain in police custody while investigations continue.

Detective Chief Inspector Steve Tonks said: "At this time we believe the victim was involved in several incidents over the course of yesterday evening and we'd like to speak to anyone who witnessed any of these.

"The first incident occurred at around 5pm when we have a report that the victim smashed a window at a property on Barsby Close, Atherstone. At this time, we are not sure what has happened prior to this and this is where we are hoping the public will be able to help.

"The second incident was an alleged altercation between the victim and the 20-year-old old man who is currently in custody. This occurred outside the White Horse pub on Long Street, Atherstone at around 8.35pm. We believe the two men had been drinking in the pub. We would like to speak to anyone who was in the White Horse between 7.00pm and 9.00pm or who witnessed the altercation.

"The final incident occurred on Barsby Close and led to him falling unconscious in the street and being taken to hospital where he passed away. We'd like to speak to anyone who witnessed this.

"We currently have two men in custody helping us with our enquiries and at this time we believe both were known to the victim."

The victim's next of kin has been informed and a post mortem is due to take place.
