HOME OFFICE SYSTEM MAKES AN ‘IMPACT’ AT EGOVERNMENT NATIONAL AWARDS

The Home Office/Association of Chief Police Officers IMPACT Nominal Index (INI) database has won the prestigious e-Government National Award in the central government ‘Team’ category. The INI database enables an officer in one force to quickly establish whether any other force holds information on a person of interest in any of their main operational systems: crime, custody, intelligence, domestic violence, firearms and child protection.

Welcoming the award, IMPACT Programme Director Adrian Cory said:

“The IMPACT team are delighted to have won this award. It represents a significant recognition of all the hard work undertaken by those involved in the IMPACT Programme including the Home Office, the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) and the wider police service, in order to deliver a valuable tool that is helping police officers protect children and vulnerable people.

“Since it was launched in December 2005 more than 75,000 child protection checks have been made on INI. As a result of those checks, additional information was identified that resulted in a significant change in the action which would otherwise have been taken in well over 600 child protection referrals. Better decisions can now be made, dramatically impacting on the lives and safety of dozens of children each year.”

The IMPACT Nominal Index (INI) is the first solution to be delivered to the Police Service in response to the Bichard report into the murder of the Soham schoolgirls. Police officers can see - for the first time - whether a person they are investigating appears to be known to any other police force. This new operational capability is helping the police to protect vulnerable children. The INI was rolled out to police forces throughout England and Wales, on time and to budget, in a very demanding timescale.

This year’s eGovernment National Award winners were chosen from among 345 nominations that were submitted by senior professionals working across the public sector. The awards have become the UK’s highest level commendation for the best e-Government services.
