RACIST INCIDENTS

WHAT IS A RACIST INCIDENT?

"A racist incident is any incident which is perceived to be racist by the victim or any other person."

Racial harassment is any act or behaviour directed at individuals or their property because of their skin colour, race, nationality, ethnic or national origins. It can take many forms, including:

  • Verbal and physical abuse
  • Harassment, alarm or distress
  • Damage to property
  • Racist literature
  • Graffitti

Alongside other legislation, the Crime and Disorder Act 1998 recognises the different types of racially motivated crime and the devastating effects on the victims.

The Anti Terrorism Act 2000 amended all of the racially aggravated offences included within the Crime and Disorder Act 1998 to read racially or religiously aggravated. Warwickshire Police record incidents of religiously aggravated crimes and incidents in the same way as racially aggravated crimes and incidents are recorded.

The penalties now reflect the seriousness of these crimes.
