There are clear procedures for handling complaints against any person serving with the police; this includes police officers and police specials of all ranks, police staff of all grades and contracted escort and detention officers. The Professional Standards Department handles all complaints.

Complaints against the chief officers, any members, or officers of the Police Authority, or a lay visitor, should be raised in the first instance, with the clerk of the Police Authority who will advise on the appropriate procedures. Any complaint against the clerk should be raised with the chairman of the Police Authority.
