HOW CRIMESTOPPERS BEGAN

An armed robbery occurred in 1976 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA where the young employee, 2 weeks before his wedding, was shot dead. This was part of a serious of robberies, which the police believed were being committed by local men. Police also believed that local people knew the identity of the killers but for whatever reason were reluctant to call the police. 6 weeks after the senseless shooting, the detective in charge, after gaining the support of local businesses who funded a reward, set up a confidential hot-line. The idea of allowing the informant to remain anonymous was entirely new. Within 72 hours information was provided and two persons were subsequently arrested, later charged and convicted of the crimes. Further information was coming in about other crimes and the scheme was expanded.

The idea has now spawned copies throughout America, Canada, Australia as well as in the UK. There are now 1000 Crimestopper schemes in the world.
