Motorcyclist Gerard Tobin was leaving a motorcyle event, The Bulldog Bash, an annual gathering held at Long Marston, near Stratford upon Avon in Warwickshire, on the afternoon of Sunday August 12 when he was shot and killed on the M40 motorway.
The shooting took place on the southbound carriageway between junctions 12 and 13, near to Leamington Spa, at around 2.20pm. Mr Tobin had travelled along the A46 to junction 15 of the M40 before joining the motorway. He was in convoy with two friends who were also travelling on motorcycles.
A green or dark coloured Rover 600 series car remains central to the inquiry at this time. Police believe the offender's car may have stopped in a layby on the A46 close to the Longbridge roundabout (M40/junction 15) and waited for the convoy of motorcycles to pass before following them onto the M40. The car may have had two or three people inside.
Mr Tobin, aged 35, of Mottingham Road, South London, was riding his Harley Davidson Night Train motorcycle. He died from a single gun shot wound to the back of his head.
Detective Superintendent Ken Lawrence, who is leading the murder inquiry said: "Gerard was a man of good character, living with his partner and working full time. He was a Canadian national but had lived in England for ten years. He had never come to the attention of the police and we have yet to establish a motive for why he was killed.
"I believe this was well planned and targeted and all the indications are that Mr Tobin was the intended victim."
