REPORTING AN RTC

If you are involved in a road traffic collision then the following information will help you to comply with the law. If there are any serious injuries or you are in a vulnerable position due to other traffic dial 999.

With all accidents, no matter how minor you must:

  • stop
  • give the name and address of the driver
  • give the name and address of the owner of the vehicle
  • give the registration number of the vehicle

To anybody who may need it.

You must also:

  • provide evidence of your insurance details if anybody has been injured in the incident, or if anybody has just grounds to require them

If you cannot provide any of the above information or there is nobody able to request the information:

  • You must report the accident in person to a police station as soon as possible and in any event within 24 hours of the accident. It is best to try to report the accident at a police station close to the scene, this simplifies the paperwork process.

You will need to take all of the following documents with you:

  • Vehicle Registration Document (V5)
  • Insurance Certificate
  • MOT Certificate
  • Driving Licence (If you have a new style driving licence you need to take both parts)

If you are having trouble obtaining these details from another party involved or there have been any allegations made call the police on 01926 415000 whilst you are still at the scene of the accident, remember if you feel you are in danger dial 999.
