SECURITY CONSIDERATIONS FOR YOUR TYPE OF HOME

In planning your individual security measures take into account the type of home you have and any special factors you may have to consider.

Bungalows

These and other types of single storey homes can be easier targets for burglars as there is no danger of being trapped upstairs. Each room can also be viewed from the outside of the building. Special consideration should be given to window and door security including locks and curtain/blinds, as well as roof access as tiles can easily be removed.

Rented accommodation

You should ask your landlord to install suitable security measures or ask permission to install your own. Window locks are relatively easy and cheap to fit. Try to limit visibility of your possessions from windows and consider security marking your property. Ask the landlord to change the locks when you move in to ensure that there are no duplicate keys available.

Houses

Pay particular attention to vulnerable access points such as doors, windows, side alleys and the back of the house. For total piece of mind consider a monitored home security system which can alert the police when you are away.

Flats

Doors to flats should be as strong as the main entry door. Strengthen the door with hinge bolts and a steel strip to stop it being kicked in or pulled off. A door entry system will help identify callers before allowing access.

Integral Garages

These require the same attention to security as the main house. Fit BS Standard dual five-lever mortice locks to up and over doors - these can be purchased with identical keys. Wooden doors should be treated in the same way as french windows. The internal door from garage to house should be of external quality and also fitted with BS five-lever mortice lock.

Static caravans and houseboats

These should be treated in the same way as for a bungalow.
