-- TIPS FOR TACKLING HOME BURGLARIES

  • The most effective way of reducing the risk of burglary is to secure your home with methods that stop or deter a thief from entering your home.

For example, stop a burglar from gaining entry by using British Standard (BS 3621) locks on all exterior doors and fit extra window locks to any external windows not already incorporating security locks. Warn off thieves by using a high quality burglar alarm system.

Burglar Alarms deter burglars and are very effective in limiting theft and damage.

  • Keep your house contents out of sight by using curtains or blinds to limit visibility through windows and doors. This will help lower the risk of a burglar noticing your home is unoccupied. If you don't like net curtains, try fashionable muslin.
  • Keep car keys out of sight - don't hang them up in the kitchen or leave them on a table in the hall.
  • Try to make it look as if you are at home, even if you are out or away. Use a timer device to turn lights on at regular and usual times (some quality burglar alarms include this security option). Cancel your milk and newspapers, keep gardens maintained and ask a friendly neighbour to keep a watchful eye over your house whilst you are away.
  • Beware of bogus callers, burglars often try to trick home owners into gaining entry, particularly elderly people or children. Install a door viewer and door chain and use it each time you answer the door. Burglar alarms which feature a panic button can also be a lifesaver. If a caller asks to gain entry, e.g. for a gas meter check, ask for identification.
  • Contact your local police station to find details of your local Neighbourhood Watch scheme and appropriate methods of marking valuable items or property which has a sentimental value. Recovered stolen property can usually be returned very quickly if it is suitably marked.
