What is the selection process?
- Competency based application form
This will be assessed to see whether you fulfil the basic criteria.
- Assessment centre
This is a process involving the collective assessment and evaluation of a number of people using a variety of role play, written exercises and an interview designed to gain a comprehensive picture of each person's skills and abilities. Two elements of the police initial recruitment test are included in the assessment centre. The assessment centre for police recruits takes about five and a half hours and is designed to assess the following key competencies:
- Respect for diversity
- Teamworking
- Community and customer focus
- Effective communication
- Problem solving
- Personal responsibility
- Resilience
- Physical fitness test - this consists of:
- Endurance fitness
- Dynamic strength
Police officers must be fit to perform their duties, and you can find out more about the fitness tests here.
- Medical
You will be examined and assessed against a set of national police standards. If you have a particular condition and would like to check whether it would prevent you from becoming a police officer, contact the recruitment team.
Throughout this process, security and reference checks will be taking place.
