In order to investigate the nature and extent of the physical fitness demands placed upon street duty policing, job analyses using questionnaires, interviews and direct observations were undertaken. The research indicated that the following physical components or "constructs" are present:
From these constructs, valid, reliable and easily administered tests were developed. The table below shows the constructs, the fitness test and their performance indicants. The standards required on these test elements were set based upon the level of fitness required to perform the physically demanding tasks identified.
| Endurance fitness | |
| 15 metre shuttle endurance test | Prolonged chases, stair climbing, foot patrols, use of force lasting several minutes |
| Dynamic strength | |
| Using dynamic strength push/pull machine | Apprehension of fighting/struggling suspects, pushing objects, e.g. cars etc |
