Chief Superintendent Steve Burrows is Deputy Director of Protective Services.
Steve Burrows joined West Midlands Police in 1983 and spent much of his first two and a half years of service policing the ethnically diverse area of Sparkhill in Birmingham. He was presented with a Force award as ‘Probationer of the Year’ in 1985.
Having passed the promotion examination to Sergeant in the top 200 candidates in the UK he was successful in being selected to attend the UK Police Accelerated Promotion Scheme at Bramshill Police College in 1986. He was promoted to Sergeant in September that year with a posting to Birmingham City Centre.
As a Sergeant Steve gained experience in uniform and plain clothes policing including the policing of drugs, pornography, prostitution and licensing.
In 1991 he was promoted to Inspector and served at various locations in Birmingham, including Handsworth. In 1993 he transferred to West Midlands Police Complaints and Discipline Department where he undertook or participated in a number of sensitive enquiries. He was promoted to Chief Inspector in charge of Family Protection Units forcewide in 1996. Between 1990 and 1994 he achieved a First Class Honours degree with the Open University.
Later that year he was Deputy SIO on a Police Complaints Authority enquiry relating to the investigation of child abuse in another Force area, following which he was posted to Willenhall Police Station as Detective Chief Inspector in April 1997.
Steve was promoted to Superintendent in September 1998 and transferred to Wednesfield in Wolverhampton as Deputy Commander. He was Acting Commander for the area for a six month period prior to transferring as Head of Intelligence for West Midlands Police in June 2001 where his role included the development of intelligence led policing and the implementation of the National Intelligence Model within the Force.
In August 2002 Steve joined Warwickshire Police on promotion to Chief Superintendent, as Northern Area Commander based at Bedworth.
In June 2005 Steve took up the post of Head of Crime and, following re-structuring, became Deputy Director of Protective Services in June 2007.
