Aim
To familiarise police officers with the safety principles, procedures and methods that must be considered to reduce risk, to Officers, colleagues and members of the public, when dealing with incidents on roads with a speed limit of 50mph or more

Objectives
At the end of the course the candidate will be able to explain, describe or demonstrate the following:

  • Sufficient knowledge and understanding of the layout and features of dual carriageways or motorways, determine their location and warn road users of carriageway hazards.
  • Knowledge & understanding of the required kit, in both standard and advanced response vehicles and how to manually handle and correctly deploy it.
  • The ability to conduct traffic control duty in a safe, professional, authoritative, clear and appropriate manner whilst taking all factors into consideration.
  • Sufficient knowledge and understanding of the different methods of safely stopping vehicle/s and the advantages or disadvantages of each method.
  • The required level of competency in responding to "Fast Road" incidents, assessing the risk at incident scenes, and acting accordingly to maximise safety by use of ACECARD and SAD CHALETS
  • How to safely deploy cones and signs to protect a lane or lanes and work in the carriageway in the safest and correct manner.
  • The ability to communicate with colleagues and relevant partner agencies, recognise their roles, and demonstrate sufficient understanding or the methods used to co-ordinate all party's activities whilst dealing with the incident.
  • demonstrate sufficient knowledge and understanding of major incident procedures on motorways including; "Rolling blocks", "Rearward relief", "Reverse flow" and "Carriageway closures.

Optimum Course Size 4-6

(2 must be at least Standard Response drivers)
