Aim
To refresh officers knowledge and understanding of their powers and responsibilities surrounding the use of stop and search and encounters, and the implications of disproportionate searching.

Objectives
By the end of the course the students will be able to.

  • Show the importance of search/encounters in protecting the communities of Warwickshire.
  • Relate quality of service to search/encounters.
  • Outline the impact of stop search and encounters on the community.
  • State the power to stop and search under Section 1 PACE 1984.
  • Explain reasonable grounds and justify reasonable suspicion.
  • Describe the difference in procedures to be followed relation to ‘Encounters’ and stop search.
  • Describe the requirements placed on officers before, during and after a stop search and encounter.
  • Explain the importance of recording stop search and encounters.
  • Describe the responsibilities of supervisors and managers.
  • Identify the requirement for intelligence.
