Further to this we would also be looking at a session covering Autism Spectrum Disorder, Schizophrenia, Asbergers Syndrome and other mental impairments/learning disabilities to give officers an insight into how these people may present their selves when coming into contact with the police.
Aim
To provide officers with the Knowledge and Understanding to enable them to deal with Mental Health Issues, meeting the needs of the local community
Objectives
By the end of the course the students will be able to.
- Identify the different types of mental health issues
- State the Police powers to remove people under sections 135 and 136 of the Mental Health Act
- Define what constitutes a place of safety.
- Describe some of the signs and symptoms a Mentally Disordered Person may display.
- Identify the risks associated with a Mentally Disordered Person.
- Manage the risks associated with a Mentally Disordered Person.
- State what arrangements need to be made for conveyance of a person with mental health issues.
- List the partner/agencies with responsibilities under the Management of MDP persons in the community.
- Outline of the relevant points of the Information agreement (Warwickshire Sharing of Information Protocol)
- State the importance of putting information on PNC relating to MDP warning markers.
- Describe the meaning of the term’ Mental Capacity’ as stated in the Mental Capacity Act 2005.
- Recognise signs and symptoms a person may display indicating a lack of Mental capacity
- Describe the 5 principles of the Mental Capacity Act 2005.
- Identify the procedures for interviewing vulnerable and intimidated witnesses.
